*Please note, The Christine B. Foundation is working very hard to deliver on this nutritional need for all cancer patients/families who seek support. But, a waitlist has been started as CBF continues to experience higher than normal requests for support.

The Christine B. Foundation (CBF) began responding to the additional burdens the COVID-19 virus had on hundreds of active cancer patients residing in Eastern Maine. CBF, in strong partnership with area food banks and volunteers, continues to take action, beyond the effects of COVID-19, by safely making home deliveries of grocery packages to cancer patients across Piscataquis, Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington County.

There is a growing number of homebound, immunocompromised, patients who are high-risk of the COVID-19 virus yet benefit most from proper nutrition through their treatment. This service will prepare and deliver Grocery Packages to patients in an effort to:
-reduce exposure to the public for the patient and their family
-reduce health risks associated with COVID-19
-reduce the need to travel
-reduces financial burdens
-increases access to a balanced diet through cancer treatment

Frequently Asked Questions (click):

Am I eligible to receive a Grocery Package?
The CBF mission is geared towards helping those affected by cancer in Eastern Maine (Piscataquis, Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington County). If you are an active cancer patient, someone entering survivorship (up to 18 months after last treatment), or have either living in your household, you are eligible to request support.
What is in each Grocery Package?
*Items may vary based on donated goods. Each package includes groceries for 3-6 days with fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, soups, and other items, following USDA’s My Plate recommendations. (bread, pasta, pasta sauce, eggs, meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, canned fruit/vegetables, soups, beans, granola bars, apple sauces, juices, peanut butter, crackers, dessert items, Ensure, almond milk, and more)
How long will it take to receive a Grocery Package after my request?
As of September 21, 2020, the CBF team began a waitlist for this service. CBF has continued to receive requests for support at a rate higher than they can offer. Upon submitting a request, CBF will immediately place your name on the waitlist and contact you once services expand &/or a route opens up for you.

What steps do CBF volunteers and staff take to ensure this is a safe delivery?
Through this National and State Emergency, we will be taking careful steps to handle food preparedness and delivery safely. Volunteers and staff follow physical distancing recommendations by making a front door drop off as opposed to a direct hand offering. Additionally, touchpoints in vehicles and volunteer/staff hands are sanitized prior to receiving/delivering packages.
Are individuals/families able to make more than one request?
Yes. Although your initial request may not automatically be placed onto a weekly delivery, CBF currently offers this support as frequently as once a week.
Can I make a custom request?
We can modify slightly around dietary restrictions such as gluten & dairy allergies, diabetics, and patients who would benefit from Ensure nutritional drinks. However, we are not able to customize each Grocery Package fully.
How much does each Grocery Package cost?
This is a no-cost, low barrier, service as the Christine B. Foundation is striving to keep the Eastern Maine cancer community safe and healthy through the COVID-19 virus and thereafter. Many items continue to be donated and this service is coordinated and distributed primarily by CBF volunteers.
