CREATE A SPIRITUAL CARE PLAN

What tools can we identify to help us on the journey; on holding the
mystery and being kind to ourselves?

TOOL #1 Identify your team and your resources (Sample doc at end)

o Write out your connections that help you through the day.
Some you are close to and some you are not. Include friends,
safe family. Medical team and others like your pharmacist and
grocer – and of course the Christine B Foundation. When you
are feeling stressed, alone or challenged – look at list and see
who you can reach out to. Is there any area you need to add
to? Be creative…they can be virtual or in person. You might
be surprised how long the list is.
o Who would you like to add to your list? (For example: Spiritual
companion names are listed in resources)

TOOL #2 IDENTIFY WHAT FEEDS YOU

Inventory or journal (and keep to remind you and add to)

o What practices have you found to be helpful? Why?
o Who have you found to be helpful? Why
o What are you holding right now that someone can help you
with?

Pause and reach for peace moments:

o What do you use to pause the world: prayer, meditation,
nature, music, dance,
o Touchstones: rocks, rosary’s, beads, stones?
o Retreat days – can you have a day of quiet? An hour of quiet?

o What is your sacred space? outdoors? Gardening? Home
altar with reminders of love and support?
o Support and encouragement quotes?
o Art as a spiritual practice without judgment
o Service as ground and empowerment – who can you help
today?
Boundaries:

o What boundaries (saying No) do you need to do to create more
space for your healing? Who can help you on your support
team list to do that?

Support groups

o Faith communities: Temple of Feminine Divine for instance;
Church, Temple, Buddhist sangha; nonprofit groups;
synagogue
o 12 Step groups

TOOL #3 Practice Good Self Care Space

Depending on your personality, create a daily care plan that includes what
is helpful. Create a reminder system either by calendar or journal or
electronic means to help you be successful. Or pray with others, daily
check in with friends. Create a schedule that feeds you and is yours based
on your support team and what feeds you.

o Physical care: physical, nutrition, exercise, sleep, medical help,
meditations
o Mental: journaling, reading,
o Spiritual: Pausing, meditation, prayer, gratitude
o Emotional: Who can help you hold your journey today? Who do you need to reach out to?

TOOL #4
Do a gratitude list. What do you feel grateful for today? Some do
a list daily to hold on to know that there are positive forces in our world

that we cannot see. Do the list as long as you wish and add specifics
(Martha’s cookies) and large (Electricity). Some do this daily as part of
their spiritual routine. This will change your vision and expand your seeing
what is in front of you.

TOOL#5 – whatever I have missed! Add your own.

Assumptions:
 You are in grace. To be on a cancer journey is to struggle with
mystery and one’s Inner source (no matter what) will always touch
you with grace. Grace does not mean knowing the answer, but the
meaning.
 You are seeing with different eyes. The journey of cancer changes
much of what we take for granted, and what is gratitude. Every
aspect of ur lives are changed into be here now, humility and service.
Being cared for and touching helplessness.

 We all grab for touchstones – what will help us hold on when we are
faced with not knowing. Stones, heart, rosary or altar?
 The cancer journey is ultimately revolutionary and will change us as
human beings. We see the world differently – and gratitude is
enhanced. We see nurses in a new way. IV poles are not just on
soap operas.
